FASTag Blacklisted? Easy Steps to Reactivate and Avoid Issues
Learn why FASTags get blacklisted and how to quickly restore toll booth access.
If you’ve ever pulled up at a toll booth and the FASTag scanner suddenly refuses to work, that could mean your FASTag is blacklisted. And no, that doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong—this happens more often than you might think. The system flags tags for various reasons. The good news? It’s not permanent, and it’s not hard to fix.
So, if your FASTag stopped working or you're just being cautious, here’s what you should know.
First, What Does "Blacklisted" Even Mean?
Let’s keep it simple. A blacklisted FASTag is a tag that the toll system won’t accept. It’s been blocked—at least temporarily. The tag is still stuck to your car, but when you drive through the ETC lane, the system doesn’t deduct toll money. Instead, the boom barrier stays down, and you might have to reverse or pay in cash.
This doesn’t mean the tag is useless forever. It just needs to be fixed.
Common Reasons This Happens
There isn’t just one cause, but a few usual suspects:
No balance in your FASTag wallet. The toll systems don’t give credit.
KYC expired or was not submitted. Banks now need verified documents to keep the tag active.
RC details mismatch. Perhaps the number plate and the details on the FASTag don’t align.
Wrong car. If the FASTag was meant for a different vehicle, and it’s used elsewhere, the system picks that up.
Linked account closed. Some people get their FASTag via a bank, and if the account is shut down or frozen, the tag gets affected.
You don’t always get a warning when this happens, either. Sometimes you only find out when you're already at the toll.
Want to Know If Yours Is Blacklisted?
Here’s what you can do.
Log in to your FASTag account – whether it’s through a bank like HDFC, ICICI, Axis, or the NHAI/IHMCL portal. You’ll usually see tag status right there.
Use the IHMCL website – https://fastag.ihmcl.com. It has an option to check your tag after logging in with your mobile number.
Call customer care. This is often the fastest way to know the problem. Banks usually have dedicated FASTag helplines.

Now, Fixing It – Depends on What Went Wrong
Let’s break it down based on the issue.
Low Balance?
Easy fix. Just top it up. Most bank FASTag apps or even UPI apps like PhonePe, Paytm, and GPay let you recharge. Add ₹200–₹300 to be safe. Once that’s done, it should reactivate in a few minutes.
KYC Not Done or Expired?
This is getting more common. Banks are now strict about KYC. If it’s missing, your FASTag may get blacklisted automatically. You’ll need to upload Aadhaar, RC copy, maybe PAN, depending on the bank. This usually takes 1–2 working days to process after submission.
Wrong Vehicle Details?
This happens when a FASTag is reused on another car. Or maybe the RC uploaded had typos. Whatever the reason, you’ll have to reach out to your FASTag issuer, explain the mismatch, and provide the right RC. They’ll update it on their end.
Account Suspension?
If your bank account is inactive or closed, the FASTag tied to it also stops. The solution? Either re-activate that bank account or request a new FASTag through another provider.
How Long Does Reactivation Take?
Usually, it’s quick. A simple recharge can activate it within 5–15 minutes. If documents are needed, it may take 24 to 48 hours, depending on your bank. Some people get it resolved in a day, others might need to wait a bit more if there are backend delays.
How to Avoid Getting Blacklisted Again
Few habits go a long way:
Keep at least ₹150–₹200 in your FASTag at all times.
Watch out for SMS or email alerts from your bank—they usually inform you about KYC deadlines.
Don’t swap FASTags between cars. That causes technical flags.
Log in to your FASTag account every few weeks just to make sure everything looks good.

Still Not Working? You Might Need a New Tag
If nothing seems to fix it, and the bank isn’t helping, your best bet is to get a new FASTag. Close the old one officially first, then apply again with fresh documents. The process is mostly online now, and you’ll get the new tag delivered in a few days.
Final Thoughts
FASTag blacklisting might catch you off guard, but it’s usually easy to sort out. Whether it’s a balance issue, document check, or a small error in the system, the fix doesn’t take long once you know what to do. Just stay updated, and your toll booth stops will stay smooth and contactless.
