New Toll Rules 2025 Why You’ll Pay More Without FASTag

NHAI toll rule update explains 1.25× charge for inactive or missing FASTag.

From November 15, 2025, NHAI updated the rules for toll payments on National Highways. The key change affects vehicles that do not have a valid FASTag or whose FASTag fails at the toll plaza. Earlier, such cars were required to pay double the toll amount. Now, if you pay using digital methods like UPI or authorised apps, the surcharge is 1.25 times the standard toll. Cash payments without FASTag will still be charged double.

This rule aims to encourage digital payments while keeping toll plaza traffic smooth. Understanding the exact details will help drivers avoid unnecessary costs and plan their highway trips efficiently.

Who is affected by the new rule?

Drivers who do not have a FASTag or whose FASTag fails at the toll plaza will be directly impacted. This includes occasional highway travellers, owners of used vehicles who have not transferred or activated FASTag, and drivers with low balances or inactive tags. Tags that are improperly placed, physically loose, or lacking proper KYC may also fail and lead to the surcharge. Commercial fleet operators with mixed FASTag compliance may face higher cumulative costs if they do not ensure all vehicles are properly registered and active.

What the surcharge means in practice

If a toll plaza charges ₹100, paying with a functioning FASTag means you pay ₹100. If your FASTag fails and you pay digitally via UPI or an authorised app, the cost rises to ₹125. If you pay by cash without a valid FASTag, the charge remains ₹200. Frequent travellers crossing multiple tolls will notice the additional expense adding up quickly, making FASTag usage or digital readiness essential to save money.

How to avoid paying the 1.25× surcharge

The best way to avoid paying extra is to ensure your FASTag is active, properly installed, and has sufficient balance. Regularly check your tag’s status through your issuer’s app or portal, and enable auto-top-up to prevent low-balance failures. Completing the FASTag KYC is also critical, as incomplete KYC can lead to deactivation or reading errors at toll plazas.

For frequent highway travellers, the Annual FASTag Pass, introduced in August 2025, is a cost-effective option. It allows unlimited trips on selected routes and prevents surcharges if the pass is active.

If your FASTag fails at a toll, use digital payments like UPI rather than cash, as the surcharge will only be 1.25× instead of 2×. Keep a record of the toll plaza name, time, and payment receipt in case of disputes. If your FASTag was active but not read correctly, contact your FASTag issuer to file a dispute.

Common FASTag issues

Low balance is the most common reason for a tag to fail. Tags that are physically loose or incorrectly affixed behind the windshield may not be read. Tags with incomplete KYC or linked to a previous owner can also be blocked. Always ensure proper installation and up-to-date KYC to avoid problems.

Conclusion

The 1.25× surcharge on failed or inactive FASTags balances the need for digital compliance with fairness for drivers. Minimal mistakes, such as low balance or improper installation, can lead to unnecessary costs. Keeping your FASTag active, properly installed, and verified, and opting for digital payment when needed, ensures smooth toll passage and avoids extra charges.
By staying informed and proactive, drivers can continue to travel on National Highways without surprises and take full advantage of the benefits FASTag offers.
