How to Renew Your Vehicle Registration Certificate in India
Easy stepwise process for vehicle registration certificate renewal and duplicate applications in India.
Let’s face it—most of us don’t think about the Registration Certificate (RC) until it’s missing or about to expire. But without it, your vehicle isn't legally allowed on the road. Whether you're driving a car, scooter, or bike, the RC is a must-have document.
If your RC has expired or you’ve lost it somewhere between shifting houses and changing wallets, don’t stress. Here’s exactly what you need to know—and do—to renew your RC or apply for a duplicate one, without any technical mumbo jumbo.
So, What Exactly Is an RC?
It’s the official proof that your vehicle is registered with the Regional Transport Office (RTO). Think of it like your vehicle’s birth certificate. It carries all the important details—registration number, chassis and engine numbers, your name, address, and even whether your car is on loan.
Basically, when traffic police ask for your papers, the RC is always first on the list.
How Long Does an RC Stay Valid?
For private vehicles, an RC is valid for 15 years from the original registration date.
After that, it needs to be renewed every 5 years.
Don’t wait till the last day—apply at least 60 days before it expires. It saves you from late fees, fines, and unnecessary RTO visits.
