Revised Traffic Challan List in India 2025 – New Fine Rules
Updated traffic fines, penalties, and challan rules effective March 2025.
From March 2025, traffic rule violations in India will pinch the wallet like never before. The government has revised penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act, and in many cases, the amounts have multiplied several times over. Drunk driving, running a red light, and ignoring helmet rules, almost every major offence now comes with a steeper fine and, in some situations, the risk of jail time.
The intention is clear: cut down dangerous driving and make roads safer for everyone.
Big Changes in the Fine Amounts
If you’re still thinking of the old rates, here’s what’s changed:
Drunk driving for the first time can cost ₹10,000 or six months in jail. Do it again, and it jumps to ₹15,000 and a possible two-year sentence.
Skipping a helmet or seatbelt? That’s ₹1,000 now, and in the case of helmets, it can also mean losing your licence for three months.
Using your phone while driving — ₹5,000.
No valid driving licence — ₹5,000.
No insurance — ₹2,000 the first time, ₹4,000 if you repeat it.
Missing PUC — ₹10,000 plus up to six months’ jail and community service.
Three on a two-wheeler — ₹1,000 fine.
Reckless driving or racing — ₹5,000.
Blocking an ambulance, fire truck, or police vehicle — ₹10,000.
Jumping a red light — ₹5,000.
Overloading a vehicle — ₹20,000.
If a minor is caught driving, ₹25,000, three years in jail for the guardian or owner, registration cancellation, and no licence until the offender is 25.
Why the Hike?
Authorities point to India’s high accident rate as the main reason. Stronger penalties are meant to discourage behaviour that puts lives at risk — speeding, drunk driving, ignoring safety gear. In some cases, the fine amounts are nearly ten times higher than before, sending a message that road safety isn’t optional anymore.
How to Keep Penalties Away
Always wear helmets and seatbelts.
Keep your driving licence, RC, insurance, and PUC up to date and in the vehicle.
Respect traffic signals and speed limits.
Make way for emergency vehicles immediately.
Avoid mobile phone use unless it’s hands-free.
Never drink before driving.
If you receive a challan, pay it online promptly to avoid additional charges.
