Hit Your Parked Car? Discover the Essential Action Plan Now

Someone Hit Your Parked Car?

Learn exactly what to do after someone hits your parked car unattended.

You walk back to your car, and something feels off. Maybe it's the crushed bumper. Or the broken mirror. Either way, someone’s hit your vehicle while it was parked—and of course, they’re nowhere to be seen.

Annoyed? Confused? Fair. But don’t worry. Here’s what to do, step by step, without losing your mind.

1. Look Over the Damage

Start by giving your car a slow, proper once-over. Check not just where it’s obvious—sometimes you’ll find damage on the other side too. Don’t touch anything just yet. Pull out your phone and take pictures from all angles. Capture the damage from various angles, both close-up and far away. If there are tire marks, broken parts on the ground, or paint scratches, click on those as well.

2. Check the Surroundings

Before you leave the spot, have a look around. Did someone leave a note? Is there a business nearby with a security camera? Anyone standing around who might’ve seen something?

If someone’s willing to talk, ask what they saw. You don’t need a full witness statement—just a name and contact number in case your insurance or the cops need it later.

3. Decide If You Should Call the Police

If the damage is small and you’ve got the other driver’s info (or a note), you may not need police help. But if the person drove off and there’s no note in sight, it’s smart to report it.

Tell the officer what happened. Share photos, location, and anything you’ve found. Ask for a copy of the report or at least the number. You might need it if this turns into an insurance or legal issue later.

4. Let Your Insurance Company Know

After dealing with the scene, call your insurance provider. They’ll ask for the basics—where you were, what the damage looks like, whether there’s a police report.

Send them all the photos you took. Keep copies for yourself, just in case. Even if you don’t have full details on the driver, they’ll tell you how to move forward with a claim.

5. If You Hit Someone’s Parked Car

Let’s say you were on the other side of this—you bumped into a parked car by mistake. What should you do?

Don’t just scribble a note and drive off. That might seem responsible, but in many places, it’s not enough. Instead, wait a few minutes. If no one comes, call the local police and let them know what happened. Give your name and details so they can pass it on to the vehicle owner.

That one step could save you a lot of legal trouble later.

6. Talk to a Lawyer If Things Don’t Go Smoothly

If the other party refuses to pay or their insurer isn’t cooperating, don’t try to fight it alone. Speak with a legal expert who handles these cases.

Bring your evidence—photos, witness contacts, police report. A lawyer will know how to handle the back-and-forth and help you get what you're owed.

Final Words

No one plans for this kind of mess. It’s frustrating, for sure. But panicking doesn’t help.

Take it one step at a time. Keep your cool. You’ll either get the damage fixed through insurance or take legal steps if needed. Either way, you’ve got this.
