Check for past accidents before buying a second-hand car with these smart tips.

Let’s be honest—buying a used car can feel like a bit of a gamble. You check the price, the model, maybe even take a test drive, but how do you know if that car has a rough past? It might look polished and perfect, but that doesn’t always mean it’s never been in a crash.

This is one of those things people don’t talk about much. Not every seller is going to come right out and say, “Oh yeah, this car had its front bumper replaced after a nasty collision.” That’s why knowing what to look for is important. It could save you a lot of money—and stress—later on.

First, What Does “Accidental” Even Mean?

Essentially, if the car has been involved in any kind of road accident—whether minor or major—it falls under this category. It could be a light scratch from a scooter, or it might’ve slammed into a divider at 60 km/h. You never really know unless someone tells you or you dig a bit deeper.

Some vehicles are repaired well. Others? Not so much. Cheap parts, rushed work, hidden frame damage—it happens more than you’d think. And in most cases, the problems don’t show up until after you’ve bought the car.

So, How Can You Tell?

You don’t need a fancy toolkit. Just a little time and a close eye. Here’s what usually helps.
Look at the paint.
One of the easiest giveaways. If one part of the car looks shinier or fresher than the rest—like just the bonnet or one door—it could’ve been repainted after an accident. Also, check around the edges. Paint drips or weird texture might mean it was touched up in a hurry.

Check panel gaps.
Ever seen a door that doesn’t shut cleanly? Or a bumper that’s just a little off? Those uneven spaces between car parts (like the hood and fenders) can mean the panels were taken off and put back—maybe not very well.

Under the car matters too.
If you can, kneel and glance underneath. See any new welds? Rusty patches? Parts that appear too new compared to the rest? That’s something you don’t ignore.

Glass can tell you a lot.
Windshields and windows usually have matching marks from the factory. If one of them has a different code—or looks strangely new—it might’ve been replaced after a crack or hit.

Badges seem minor, but they’re not.
If a badge looks crooked, misplaced, or too clean, it might’ve been reattached during bodywork. Little details like this can hint at a repaint job.

Ask straight up.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is ask. Has the car ever been in an accident? What was repaired? People may not always be honest, but their answers can still reveal a lot.

Check the numbers.
The VIN and engine number should match the RC book. You’ll find the VIN stamped in the engine bay, and the engine number on the block itself. If they don’t match the papers? Walk away.

Service history helps too.
Ask for it. If parts like radiators or suspension components were replaced too soon, that might point to a past impact. You can also call the service centre to double-check.

Is It Worth All This Effort?

Short answer: yes. A lot of people skip these steps and regret it later. Repairs after an accident, especially the hidden ones, can cost a fortune. Worse, your safety could be at risk if the car wasn’t fixed right.

You don’t need to be paranoid, just aware. Take your time, ask the right questions, and bring a friend or mechanic along if you’re unsure.

Final Tip Before You Buy

If something feels off, don’t talk yourself into it. There are always other cars, better options, and cleaner histories. Rushing into a deal just because it looks good from the outside? That’s where people usually go wrong.

Buy smart, not fast. The more you check, the fewer surprises you’ll get later.
